Hacienda – Our History

Our History

Four generations of the Cruz family have served as wildlife conservation stewards and spirit keepers of this captivating property which dates back in their family to the early 1800’s. The Inn’s main building was rebuilt in the 1990’s with renovations and expansions continuing through today. Hacienda Jimenita’s historic preservation has earned its designation as an Ecuadorian Cultural and Archæological Heritage site of the Distrito Metropolitano de Quito as well as a special tourist destination. It is common for guests when departing through our gates to announce their upcoming return. Jimenita… a place to revisit, again and again.

Hacienda Jimenita

The history of Hacienda Jimenita begins around 10,000 years BC. C, when the first settler of Ecuador settles near the Ilaló volcano. Already in colonial times, Pifo was the entry point of the Jesuit order to the Ecuadorian Amazon. It was then that Joaquín Sánchez de Orellana inherited the "Sigsipamba" farm with more than one hectare from his son José Javier and son-in-law Manuel Gómez de la Torre. In 1865 he sold the old part of this hacienda and the bay became an "Olalla" hacienda. In 1930 the "Olalla" Hacienda was disintegrating by plots and after several sales of Eduardo Salazar Gómez, the old property until 1951, what is currently Hacienda La Jimenita was established in approximately 1960.

The Hacienda had its beginnings as a plantation of Tree Tomatoes and Potatoes, in the name of Jorge Arcecio Cruz Miranda and Rafael Alfonso Lopez, members of the current family. Over time our home became a farm to enjoy family time and be surrounded by nature. Since the New Quito Airport was built on the outskirts of the city of Quito, in 2013 the Cruz-Lopez Family and current owners of Hacienda Jimenita have created an exclusive hotel full of history and surrounded by nature with the aim of providing memorable experiences to its visitors from all over the world. The family has been conserving and planting native species for over 20 years on the property with the aim for conservation and protecting the natural wildlife.
