Welcome to Hacienda Jimenita & Wildlife Reserve – 15 minutes from Quito Airport

At the end of the 80's, several excavations were carried out on the hacienda lands in order to find water, since in the past this area was very dry. In one of the excavated wells it was possible to find some traces of ceramics, obsidian arrowheads and some tools made of rock that perhaps were used to cut food. In addition, what appeared to be steps and access to a tunnel completely covered with sand were also found. We remove all the stone material very delicately and following the context of the tunnel. The tunnel has a figure of a snake with 150 steps and several vaults inside.

The Holger Hara Archaeological Center carried out several studies of the artifacts found and the "Mysterious Tunnel". The results determined that the "Mysterious tunnel" was made before the 1400's, that is, before the Incas. It is presumed that it was built with the purpose of uniting several towns since this joins the Pre-Inca road that unites the Sierra with the Coast and the East. Some of the artifacts found are also from La Cosa and Amazonia, for which it was determined that it was a route for Barter between regions.

Today there are guided tours to this mysterious Pre-Inca Tunnel and access is only by prior reservation. To guarantee our personalized service to each of our clients, visits without reservation are not allowed.
